Workshop: "Bamboo - a miracle of nature"

with Simon Velez, September 6 - 19, 1999

The Vitra Museum is organizing a workshop on the theme "Building with Bamboo" which will be held from September 6 - 19, 1999. The course will be directed by Colombian architect Simon Velez, whose constructions are among the largest bamboo structures in the world. At present, Velez has been commissioned by the ZERI (Zero Emission Research Initiative) Foundation and is working on a bamboo pavilion which is 40 meters in diameter and 17.5 meters high, for EXPO 2000 in Hanover.

After the devastating earthquake in Colombia in January 1999, Velez developed low-cost houses made of bamboo, which helped the destroyed cities to be swiftly reconstructed. The two-story houses offer 60 sq. meters of living space for a total construction price of US$ 5,900. In this unique project, economical factors, but also to a large extent ecological, social and aesthetic aspects are taken into account.

As a part of Velez's workshop, two such buildings will be erected for the first time in Europe. In so doing, the participants of the seminar will be given thorough instruction in the use of bamboo as a building material.

The architect will be chiefly introducing the construction principles and joining techniques which allow bamboo to be used as a natural alternative to steel. The intensive, practical work program will be complemented by lectures and discussions.

The workshop is to be offered as part of the annual summer academy organized by the Vitra Museum in collaboration with the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the C.I.R.E.C.A. (International Center for Research, Cultural and Agricultural Education). There will be a total of 25 courses from July to October, lead by internationally renowned designers, architects and artists.

The event will take place at the Domaine de Boisbuchet, an idyllic 19th century country estate. Situated in the magnificent landscape of Charente, the facilities offer a variety of recreational activities which participants can enjoy once the work is done.

Participant costs: The workshop "Bamboo - a miracle of nature (Sept. 6 - 19, 1999) is open to anyone over the age of 18. It is particularly suitable for architects, designers, interior designers, engineers, developmental aid workers, city planners and social workers. The cost of the workshop including accommodation, full board, course fees and materials is 950 euro for students and 1250 euro for other participants. (All prices excluding travel.)
