About the lectures
The adult heights of 52 Phyllostachys species for 8 bamboo-countries:
Robert and Jacques Van Dooren
In the specialised bamboo literature of China, Japan, the U.S.A. and Europe a lot of new information about the
maximum possible adult heights for the Phyllostachys has been published. This lecture covers covers the lesser
known aspects of realistic adult heights of 52 species of Phyllostachys for 8 bamboo-countries and addresses discrepancies
in literature related to the speed of growth, the effect of different clones and of cultivation methods, as well
as the influence of frost damages. The relation between the maximum culm height and diameter and the importance
of the culm diameter in the presence of leaves is discussed and methods to improve culm height are proposed.
Robert and Jacques Van Dooren are well known bamboo collectors (see: .exoticgarden.net). Jacques Van Dooren
is the President of the Belgian Bamboo Society and together with Robert he has published several articles recently
on growth and behaviour of Phyllostachys in various European bamboo newsletters and journals.
Bamboo: new introductions, new possibilities
Jos Van der Palen
In the recent decade numerous new introductions of temperate bamboos have been collected and introduced in Europe.
From this large number of introductions, only a limited number will eventually be useful in our gardens. In this
lecture Jos Van der Palen will highlight some of the best bamboos for the future in our temperate climates.
Jos Van der Palen is a renowned bamboo collector who has been to China several times. His nursery and collection
in Valkenswaard, The Netherlands, are very famous. In this lecture Jos Van der Palen will present information on
some recent introductions of temperate bamboos in Europe.
The future of bamboo in Europe in an agricultural perspective
Johan Gielis
Bamboo has been cultivated in Europe for nearly 200 years as an ornamental plant and has grown increasingly popular.
In a recent research project "Bamboo for Europe" 9 partners from different Europen countries have looked
into other possible uses such as the use of bamboo as an agricultural plant for use in wood industry and as a bioenergy
plants. In this project several bottlenecks related to the large scale introduction of bamboo in agriculture have
been addressed and solved.
Johan Gielis has been working professionally with bamboo for over 15 years. His main interest is bamboo biotechnology
and fundamental research. On these topics he has given lectures all around the world.
